Check your eligibility before you book
The Refresher is only for people who are currently Accredited Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders) and whose accreditation has not yet expired. Completing the Refresher extends your accreditation for a further 3 years.
If your accreditation has already expired, you will need to complete a full course again. The Community Mental Health First Aid course is the most popular option and also runs fully online with Dal.
Reserve your place
Book and pay securely by card. Your seat is held on the next Refresher date in the fortnightly rotation.
Confirm eligibility
Provide the expiry date of your current accreditation and your Certificate of Accreditation, available in your MHFA Australia account, so Dal can verify your eligibility before the session.
Attend the Zoom session
Join Dal live for one 5-hour session. Sessions are confirmed at 6 or more participants, or your booking rolls to the next rotation.
Secure card payment upfront. For current MHFAiders only; please check your accreditation expiry date before booking. Sessions confirmed at 6+ participants, or your place rolls to the next fortnight.
Is the Refresher the right course for you?
MHFA Australia sets the eligibility rules for Refresher courses, and they matter: booking the wrong course wastes your money and your morning. Two minutes here will tell you whether the Refresher is your course, or whether you need a full course instead.
The Refresher is for you if
- You are a currently Accredited Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider) and your accreditation has not yet expired
- You gained that accreditation through an adult MHFA course: Standard, Community, Workplace, Older Person, Tertiary or an industry-specific stream such as Financial Services, Legal or Pharmacy
- You can provide your Certificate of Accreditation, available through your MHFA Australia account, before the session
You need a different course if
- Your accreditation has already expired: you will need to complete a full course again, such as the Community MHFA course online
- You missed your Refresher due to illness or other disruption: MHFA Australia sometimes grants accreditation extensions, so it is worth contacting them at mhfa@mhfa.com.au or +61 3 9079 0200 before booking anything
- You are a Youth MHFAider: you need the Youth MHFA Refresher, which Dal also runs online, rather than this Standard Refresher
One live session, and your accreditation is renewed for 3 years
Unlike the full courses, there is no lengthy eLearning component and no pre-work. Everything happens in a single 5-hour live Zoom session with Dal. Public sessions run on Fridays, with some Wednesday dates, on a fortnightly rotation. If you are booking for an organisation, Dal can be flexible and schedule a private session on a day that suits your team.
Book and verify
Reserve your place, then supply your accreditation expiry date and Certificate of Accreditation. No study is required beforehand.
5 hours on Zoom
Friday or Wednesday, 9:00am to 2:00pm NSW/VIC time, with breaks. Group discussion, case scenarios and interactive updates, delivered live by Dal.
Renewed accreditation
Complete MHFA Australia's short online assessment after the session and your MHFAider accreditation is extended for a further 3 years.
The updated manual
After booking you receive a coupon code to order the newly updated MHFA manual, which all refreshed MHFAiders are required to hold.
Sessions run on a fortnightly rotation and are confirmed at 6 or more participants. If the minimum is not reached, your booking rolls to the next available date. MHFA Australia requires 6 to 12 confirmed participants per class.
Session times in every state and territory
The session is anchored to 9:00am to 2:00pm NSW/VIC time and welcomes MHFAiders from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Canberra alike. Use the highlighted column to find your local time today.

A note for Western Australia participants
Because the session is anchored to NSW/VIC time, Perth participants have an early start: 7:00am during the standard time months, and 6:00am while the eastern states are on daylight saving. Many WA participants find the early start works in their favour, with the session wrapped up around midday. One WA participant, reviewing Dal's online Youth MHFA Refresher, wrote:
"Enjoyed the online youth mental health first aid refresher delivered by Dal. Small group was ideal for me and presentation was well organised and the activities and discussion time via breakout rooms were great. WA time is a bit of an early start (7am) however I preferred that in the end. Dal has great content knowledge and facilitates and engages participants well." Olive Mereyato, verified Google review
What the Refresher covers
Three years is a long time in mental health research and practice. The Refresher sharpens the skills you already have and brings you up to date with what has changed since you first trained, so you can keep acting as an MHFAider with confidence.
Revisiting your core skills
- The mental health first aid action plan, refreshed and applied to realistic scenarios
- Group discussion of complex first aid interactions and how to handle them
- Responding to mental health crises, including suicidal thoughts and behaviours and non-suicidal self-injury
- The boundaries of the MHFAider role and current referral pathways
What is new since you trained
- Updates from the latest research and revised MHFA guidelines
- Newly updated manual content on gambling problems and eating disorders
- Revised guidance on suicidal thoughts and behaviours and non-suicidal self-injury
- The updated LGBTIQ+ guidelines
Because the group is drawn from every state and territory, the discussion reflects the realities MHFAiders face across Australia, from metropolitan workplaces in Victoria to regional communities in Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia.
Refreshed by a clinician, not just a course presenter
This Refresher is delivered by Dal Sahota, an MHFA Australia Licensed Instructor, Clinical Hypno-Psychotherapist and Principal Master Mental Health Educator who has personally trained thousands of people across Australia. Dal brings years of clinical practice into the session, which means the questions you have accumulated over three years as an MHFAider are answered from real therapeutic experience, not from a script.
"Dal is an exceptional psychotherapist and mental health trainer. Her sessions are surprisingly versatile where she not only tailors her training style to accommodate trainees of different backgrounds but also gently challenges learners to enhance their learning skills and comprehension. She also balances her sessions with equal amount of instruction and group discussions, thereby allowing the learners to grasp and apply what they have learnt as soon as possible. I highly recommend making the most of her expertise and experience."Vinay Umarji

Frequently asked questions
Am I eligible for the Refresher course?
You are eligible if you are a currently Accredited Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider), meaning you completed a full MHFA course and its accreditation assessment within the last 3 years and your accreditation has not yet expired. You will need to provide your Certificate of Accreditation, available through your MHFA Australia account, before the session, and the booking form asks for your accreditation expiry date so Dal can verify your eligibility.
What if my accreditation has already expired?
If your accreditation has expired you are no longer eligible for the Refresher and will need to complete a full course again. Dal runs the Community Mental Health First Aid course fully online, which is the most popular pathway back to accreditation. If you missed your Refresher due to illness or other disruption, MHFA Australia sometimes grants accreditation extensions, so it is worth contacting them at mhfa@mhfa.com.au or +61 3 9079 0200 before you book anything.
I completed the Community or Workplace course. Is this the right Refresher for me?
Yes. This Standard MHFA Refresher renews accreditation gained through the adult MHFA streams, including the Standard, Community, Workplace, Older Person, Tertiary and industry-specific courses such as Financial Services, Legal and Pharmacy. If you are a Youth MHFAider, you need the Youth MHFA Refresher instead, which Dal also runs online.
What if I attended a course but never completed the accreditation assessment?
MHFA Australia allows you to complete the accreditation assessment for up to 3 months after your course. If you are still within that window, email mhfa@mhfa.com.au to request a link to complete it. Once accredited, your accreditation runs for 3 years from your course completion, and you become eligible for the Refresher before it expires.
Is there any eLearning or pre-work before the session?
No. Unlike the full MHFA courses, the Refresher has no eLearning component and no pre-learning. Your only preparation is to book, provide your accreditation details and turn up to the live Zoom session.
What days and times does the Refresher run?
Public sessions run on Fridays, with some Wednesday dates, on a fortnightly rotation, from 9:00am to 2:00pm NSW/VIC time. The booking form shows the upcoming dates. If you are booking for an organisation, Dal can be flexible and run a private session on a day that suits your team.
Can my organisation book a private Refresher session?
Yes. Dal regularly runs private Refresher sessions for workplaces, schools and community organisations, scheduled on a day that suits the group. MHFA Australia requires 6 to 12 confirmed participants per class, and a group rate is available for organisation bookings paid in full. Get in touch through the site to arrange dates.
What happens if the session does not reach minimum numbers?
Live Zoom sessions are confirmed once 6 or more participants have booked. If the minimum is not reached, your booking automatically rolls to the next date in the fortnightly rotation, and nothing further is required from you.
What is the Learner Access Pass?
The Learner Access Pass is a $20 + GST fee set and collected by MHFA Australia that applies to all new enrolments from February 2026. It is not charged by Dal; it goes directly to MHFA Australia to support the national MHFAider platform.
Do I receive the updated MHFA manual?
Yes. After booking you receive a coupon code to order the newly updated MHFA manual. MHFA Australia requires all refreshed MHFAiders to hold the most current edition for the full 3 years of renewed accreditation. The latest edition includes revised content on gambling problems, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury and the LGBTIQ+ guidelines. You do not need the manual during the Zoom session itself; it is kept as your reference.
Can I join from anywhere in Australia?
Yes. The Refresher welcomes MHFAiders from NSW, VIC, QLD, TAS, SA, WA, NT and the ACT. The session is anchored to 9:00am to 2:00pm NSW/VIC time; the session times table above shows your local equivalent, and your confirmation email will state your exact local start time for the date you book. WA participants should note the early start of 7:00am Perth time; during the eastern states' daylight saving months the start moves one hour earlier.
Who delivers the training?
Every session is delivered live by Dal Sahota, an MHFA Australia Licensed Instructor, Clinical Hypno-Psychotherapist and Principal Master Mental Health Educator. You refresh your skills directly with a practising clinician, not a presenter working from a script.
