What is mental health first aid?
Mental health first aid is the help you give to someone who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing problem, or in a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid keeps someone safe until medical help arrives, mental health first aid supports a person until professional help is available or the crisis resolves.
What a Mental Health First Aider does
- Recognises the early signs of common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety
- Approaches the person and starts a safe, non-judgemental conversation
- Responds in a crisis, including thoughts of suicide, panic attacks and traumatic events
- Encourages the person towards appropriate professional help and other supports
Why it matters
- Around 1 in 5 Australian adults experience a mental health problem in any year
- Many people wait years before seeking help, often because nobody around them knows what to say
- A trained first aider can shorten that gap, reduce distress and connect people with support sooner
- Accreditation gives workplaces, schools and community groups a recognised standard of care
Mental health first aid courses are developed and accredited by MHFA Australia, the national accrediting body. Every course teaches a practical, evidence-based action plan, and every full course leads to national accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider, valid for 3 years. Dal offers a full range of seven accredited MHFA courses, all available for booking year round.
