PTSD Hypnotherapy for Trauma Recovery

PTSD hypnotherapy is an emerging area of trauma recovery that blends evidence-based psychological understanding with the transformative potential of the subconscious mind. While cognitive and behavioural therapies are often frontline approaches, more people are seeking deeper, more integrative methods—especially when traditional approaches alone haven’t worked.
What Is PTSD, Really?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that can develop following exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. It’s characterised by intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, and avoidance of triggers.
The DSM-5 recognises PTSD as a trauma- and stressor-related disorder, affecting around 12% of Australians at some point in their lives, with even higher rates in veterans, first responders, and survivors of abuse or systemic trauma (AIHW, 2022).
Why PTSD Hypnotherapy Helps When Talk Therapy Isn’t Enough
Hypnotherapy provides a unique way to access and work with the subconscious mind—the part of us that stores memory, emotion, and habit. In trauma recovery, this matters because trauma is not just remembered. It is relived—in the body, the nervous system, and automatic reactions.
Hypnotherapy allows safe exploration of traumatic material, fosters emotional regulation, and promotes internal safety and integration.
“Trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past. It is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.”
— Dr Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score
What the Research Says
- A meta-analysis by Rotaru & Rusu (2016) found clinical hypnotherapy significantly reduced PTSD symptoms, especially when used in conjunction with other trauma-informed therapies.
- Dr David Spiegel, a world leader in clinical hypnosis, demonstrated that hypnosis reduces hyperarousal and supports memory integration.
- Dr Daniel Amen recommends hypnotherapy to help calm the limbic system and reframe trauma-based thought patterns.
- Spiegel & Cardeña (1990) showed that hypnosis assists in reintegration for dissociation-based PTSD presentations.
How I Use Hypnotherapy for PTSD
In my work as a Clinical Hypno-Psychotherapist, I use a trauma-informed approach that respects the client’s readiness, autonomy, and pace. I integrate:
- Grounding and stabilisation work
- Psychoeducation on the nervous system and trauma responses
- Hypnotic techniques to gently renegotiate traumatic memories
- Visualisation, inner child work, and resource-building
When combined with CBT or somatic therapies, hypnotherapy often helps clients move past blocks they’ve been stuck with for years.
PTSD Hypnotherapy and Survival States
Many people with PTSD are stuck in chronic fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses. Hypnotherapy reduces these states by calming the amygdala, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, and strengthening a felt sense of internal safety. This mirrors the work of Dr Peter Levine, who sees trauma as “stuck survival energy” needing safe release.
Complex PTSD: A More Sensitive Approach
Complex PTSD—often from prolonged emotional abuse or neglect—requires even more attuned care. Hypnotherapy in this space is gentle, validating, and empowering, helping clients rebuild trust in themselves. Dr Gabor Maté explains trauma as “not what happens to you, but what happens inside you,” and hypnotherapy works directly with those inner shifts.
