A note for Western Australia participants
Because the session is anchored to NSW/VIC time, Perth participants have an early start: 7:00am during the standard time months, and 6:00am while the eastern states are on daylight saving. Many WA participants find the early session works well, finishing around midday. One WA participant, reviewing this exact course, wrote:
"Enjoyed the online youth mental health first aid refresher delivered by Dal. Small group was ideal for me and presentation was well organised and the activities and discussion time via breakout rooms were great. WA time is a bit of an early start (7am) however I preferred that in the end. Dal has great content knowledge and facilitates and engages participants well." Olive Mereyato, verified Google review
What the Refresher session covers
The Refresher is designed to bring your Youth MHFA skills back to the front of your mind and up to date. In one focused session you revisit the core of the course you originally completed, work through current guidance, and practise applying it to the young people you support.
Refreshing your skills
- Revisiting the mental health first aid action plan and how to apply it with adolescents
- Updates to research and guidance on youth mental health since you last trained
- Recognising emerging and worsening mental health problems in young people
- Starting supportive, non-judgemental conversations with a young person you are concerned about
Rebuilding crisis confidence
- Responding to suicidal thoughts and behaviours in young people
- Responding to non-suicidal self-injury
- Working through realistic scenarios in small breakout groups
- Connecting young people with professional help and appropriate supports
Because most participants are teachers, school staff and others who work with young people, Dal draws the discussion toward the situations you actually face, whether that is a classroom in regional Queensland, a sporting club in Victoria or a youth service in Perth. The session also revisits the boundaries of the Youth MHFAider role, so you always know where first aid ends and professional care begins.
Refreshed by a clinician, not just a course presenter
This Refresher is delivered by Dal Sahota, an MHFA Australia Licensed Instructor, Clinical Hypno-Psychotherapist and Principal Master Mental Health Educator. Dal brings years of clinical practice into every session, which means your questions about supporting young people are answered from real therapeutic experience, and sensitive topics are handled with genuine clinical care.
"Dal is an exceptional psychotherapist and mental health trainer. Her sessions are surprisingly versatile where she not only tailors her training style to accommodate trainees of different backgrounds but also gently challenges learners to enhance their learning skills and comprehension. She also balances her sessions with equal amount of instruction and group discussions, thereby allowing the learners to grasp and apply what they have learnt as soon as possible. I highly recommend making the most of her expertise and experience."Vinay Umarji

What participants say about the Youth Refresher
"I would highly recommend this refresher MHFirst Aid Youth course with Dal. From start to finish it was professionally presented, plenty of break times and the speed of the content was presented clearly and time efficient. Having a smaller group, I felt, was beneficial when we went into our breakout room sessions and having the time to speak to fellow online colleagues was beneficial. Thank you Dal."Steph PASTERFIELD

"I completed my Mental Health Aid refresher training with Dal, she made the session relevant to the participants by choosing common issues that are experience be adolescents in the secondary school environment (as we were all connected to school), Dal made great use of break out spaces so you go to work with all of the people within the group. There was great ‘flow’ to the session and she encouraged group participation through out the session. Thanks Dal."Karen Danks

"I had the opportunity to complete the refresher course with Dal Sahota last week, where we discussed the latest youth mental health research. Dal is very knowledgeable and engaging. We focused on self harm, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and the importance of early intervention, conversations, support, professional help, and reducing stigma. It was a great session, and I highly recommend Dal as a trainer."Inigo Family

"I recently attended the Youth Mental Health First Aid Refresher course delivered by Dal via Zoom and had a truly positive experience. The session was both informative and engaging and Dal perfected the balance between being professional and being approachable. Sometimes with an online training, you can feel like you are not getting the full experience as you would when a course is delivered face to face but that was not the case when Dal delivered this course. Highly recommend."Bec Wells

"I attended Dal’s online Youth Mental Health First Aid refresher course. She was prompt, understanding and knowledgeable. Dal was well spoken and explained things clearly and in easy terms to understand. Lots of opportunities were provided for questions and discussion. I finished the course with a refreshed knowledge of how to help people who are having mental health problems and felt more equipped to handle sensitive conversations around Mental Health and more critical conversations around Suicide. Thanks Dal, much appreciated."Cara Ryan

Frequently asked questions
Am I eligible for the Youth MHFA Refresher?
You are eligible if you completed the full Youth Mental Health First Aid course and the accreditation assessment, and your Youth MHFAider accreditation has not yet expired. Completing the Refresher extends your accreditation for a further 3 years. You will need your Certificate of Accreditation before the session.
What if my Youth MHFA accreditation has already expired?
Once accreditation has expired, MHFA Australia requires you to complete the full course again rather than a Refresher. You can book the full Youth MHFA course online with Dal. If your accreditation is about to expire and you cannot attend a Refresher in time, contact MHFA Australia at mhfa@mhfa.com.au or +61 3 9079 0200 to ask about a short extension.
I completed a Standard, Community or Workplace course. Is this the right Refresher?
No. This Refresher is only for Youth MHFAiders. If your accreditation came from a Standard, Community or Workplace course, you need the Standard MHFA Refresher instead, which renews all adult-stream accreditations.
Do I need my Certificate of Accreditation?
Yes. Your Certificate of Accreditation confirms your eligibility and your expiry date, and it is required before the session. If you cannot locate it, contact MHFA Australia at mhfa@mhfa.com.au or +61 3 9079 0200 and they can confirm your accreditation status.
I finished the Youth course but never completed the accreditation assessment. Can I take the Refresher?
Not yet. MHFA Australia allows 3 months from the end of your course to complete the online accreditation assessment. If you are within that window, complete the assessment first and then plan your Refresher before the 3-year accreditation expires. If the window has closed and you never became accredited, you will need to complete the full Youth MHFA course.
What happens if the session does not reach minimum numbers?
Sessions are confirmed once 6 or more participants have booked. If the minimum is not reached, your booking automatically rolls to the next available Thursday and you are kept informed by email.
What days does the Refresher run?
Public sessions run every Thursday, 9:00am to 2:00pm NSW/VIC time. The booking form shows the upcoming dates. Organisations and schools wanting to book a group of staff can negotiate other days directly with Dal.
Can my school or organisation book a private Refresher session?
Yes. Private sessions are available for groups of 6 to 12 staff, and the day can be arranged to suit your organisation rather than the public Thursday rotation. This is a popular option for schools renewing the accreditation of several staff at once. A group rate is available for organisation bookings paid in full.
Is there any eLearning or pre-work?
No. Unlike the full Youth MHFA course, the Refresher has no eLearning component and no pre-work. Everything is covered in the single live 5 hour Zoom session.
What is the Learner Access Pass?
The Learner Access Pass is a $20 + GST fee set and collected by MHFA Australia for every course participant. It covers your access to the updated Youth MHFA manual and course materials.
Can I join from anywhere in Australia?
Yes. The Refresher is delivered fully online, nationally, and welcomes Youth MHFAiders from NSW, VIC, QLD, TAS, SA, WA, NT and the ACT. The session is anchored to 9:00am to 2:00pm NSW/VIC time; the session times table above shows your local equivalent, and your confirmation email will state your exact local start time. WA participants should note the early start of 7:00am Perth time; during the eastern states' daylight saving months the start moves one hour earlier.
What do I need to attend the Zoom session?
A computer or tablet with a camera, microphone and a stable internet connection. The session is interactive, with discussion and small group work in breakout rooms, so being able to speak and be seen helps you get the most from it.
Who delivers the training?
Every session is delivered live by Dal Sahota, an MHFA Australia Licensed Instructor, Clinical Hypno-Psychotherapist and Principal Master Mental Health Educator. You learn directly from a practising clinician, not a presenter working from a script.
