A Beginners Guide To Essential Oils

Essential oils consist of aromatic, oxygenated particles full of minerals. They come from plants including the plant root, flowers, resin, stems, barks or leaves.

Getting the oil from a plant is done with a process called distillation, by water or steam. This method separates the oil and water-based compounds of a plant.

The human body carries a substance called blood. The main function of the blood is to transport nutrients to the cells. What allows the nutrients to be delivered via the blood through each cells wall is oxygen.

Essential oils mirror the same function in plants. The substance found in plants is called resin or the blood of the plant. The primary ingredient found in essential oils is also oxygen.

Essential oils have been used worldwide in many cultures for over 5,000 years as natural remedies for health and medicinal purposes.

They’ve been known for their healing properties and applied using aromatherapy in a range of physical, emotional and wellness practices.

They can be used independently or blended with other oils depending on the benefit required by the user.

It is important to note that these concentrated oils must not be used neat or taken internally unless this has been prescribed for you to do so by a trained professional.

Where Does The Term “Aromatherapy” Come From?
A French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, invented the term “aromatherapy”. In 1920 he burned his hand whilst conducting an experiment when he quickly placed his hand into what turned out to be a tub of the lavender essential oil.

The speed at which his hand healed with very little scaring amazed him. He then began experimenting with various essential oils during the First World War on soldiers in the military.

How Do Essential Oils Get Into The Human Body?
This happens as we breath them into our system through the nasal cavity along cells called Olfactory Sensory Neurons. The oil molecules are picked up by the neurons, which hang down from the olfactory, between the eyes and above the sinus cavity.

The oil molecules are carried within milliseconds into the centre of the brain to where they cause a secretion of antibodies, endorphins and neurotransmitters.

Then depending on which oil is being used, it will circulate around the body and provide certain benefits. This is also how they have the ability to impact our mood and hormones.

Other Techniques For Using Essential Oils:

I personally first started using essential oils in aromatherapy massage on my clients 20 years ago and I still use them to this day on my skin. I also use them in cooking and in my oil diffuser during reiki sessions as well as around my home. I love to diffuse oils as it instantly puts the essential oils into the atmosphere, which provides increased oxygen as it releases oxygenating molecules.

Used on a regular basis, aromatherapy can begin to enhance, shape and influence your life. If you have an interest in expanding your knowledge on the properties and benefits of essential oils, the best way to learn and understand them is to start using them one at a time in a safe way.

I use Doterra for personal use and at The Perth Healing Room with my clients during Reiki. To find out more about purchasing essential oils, click here.
